Why Do We Need Antioxidants?

You may have heard people talk about the importance of Antioxidants and how you need to make sure they are in your diet….but why? What makes them so important, and more importantly how do we get them? Recently doTERRA released a lot of new essential oils and a couple of them are ‘high in antioxidants,’ which got me thinking….maybe I should break this down a little more so we all understand it.

Antioxidants are stable molecules that can neutralize free radicals. Some antioxidants are found in the foods we eat, particularly in fruits and vegetables, and some antioxidants are manufactured by the body. Most medical experts recommend that we increase our consumption of foods containing antioxidants. You can also increase your antioxidant consumption through supplementation specifically polyphenols and even specific essential oils.

What are free radicals? They are unstable molecules that can damage and even destroy healthy, functioning cells and speed the aging process by compromising cellular DNA and other critical cell structures, including energy producing mitochondria. These are molecules produced when your body breaks down food or is exposed toxins such as tobacco smoke, car exhaust or radiation. I have heard a lot of different numbers, but they are all big, one I recently read said that every puff of a cigarette contains about 100 trillion free radical molecules. all these free-radical sources can push oxidative stress beyond what the body can safely handle. Cellular Free-radical damage is believed to play a major role in aging. This may play a role in many of the on going big name health problems we see in our society.

So there are two things we can do here! The first is to try and decrease our exposure to free radicals. There are things we can’t avoid like car exhaust, but we can avoid cigarettes as well as minimize our exposure to toxic chemicals by ensuring that our personal care items do not have toxins in them. For me it’s easy….if doTERRA doesn’t make it I don’t use it. Shampoo, conditioner, skin care, soap, moisturizer, laundry soap, I don’t even have to think about it! Granted it took me some time to get there. I slowly added things in and changed things out. Now it is easy as can be.

The second thing we can do is ensure that we get enough antioxidants each day. The more free radicals we are exposed to the more antioxidants we need. Again there are a lot of numbers out there, but I recently read this number and it stuck with me, we need to get a daily minimum of 8-11,000 antioxidant units a day. In terms that makes way more sense that is approximately 36 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Yes I just said 36…..so you probably just said to yourself, oh crud, I do not do that!!!!

So being more realistic about this it is important that we eat high quality fruits and veggies on a daily basis but due to the way our food is processed and seeing that the antioxidant levels have decreased so drastically in our foods we need to supplement this so we can get to this optimal daily level of antioxidants to help our body fight off many of those scary medical diagnosis you hear about on a daily basis. So how do you increase your daily antioxidant levels without having to sit down all day and do nothing but eat fruits and veggies.

Here is what I do! doTERRA Lifelong Vitality. The Alpha CRS specifically contains powerful polyphenols that protect cells from free radicals that can damage cellular DNA, mitochondria, and other critical cell structures. but is is not just the Alpha CRS, it the entire Lifelong Vitality Pack. Many of the ingredients found in the doTERRA Lifelong Vitality Program have been shown to support a healthy oxidative stress response in cells. The supplements also include a blend of essential fatty acids and CPTG essential oils that have been clinically demonstrated to support normal and healthy oxidative stress response in cells.

There are a lot of different essential oils high in antioxidants.

Clove, Cinnamon, Oregano, Blue Tansy, Yarrow/Pom, Rosemary, Basil, Lemon, Thyme, Geranium, Myrrh, Turmeric, and Pink Pepper.

So you have A LOT to choose from! You can simply take a veggie cap and as 2-3 drops 2 times a day to help boost your antioxidant levels.
