Do you deal with anxiety? There are natural options for you!
Did you know that anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the US affecting 40 million adults, that is 18.1% of the population every year. That is a scary statistic to me. I also realize that although a lot of people seek support, many people just live with their anxiety. Settle with the fact that it is a normal part of their lives. So let’s talk about mental wellness for a bit!
We live in a world where we want everything to happen instantly. We spend too much time with our smart phones and laptops without ever really giving ourselves a break from work. We lose out on opportunities to connect with friends and family. We feel that working hard and taking fewer breaks makes us successful. The bills won’t stop coming, there will never be more hours in the day, and work and family responsibilities will always be demanding. A nagging headache, trouble sleeping, a lack of energy and decreased productivity are all signs of everyday stress. Exercise like Yoga or a few hours at the gym helps. Meditation, eating right, even hobbies or a vacation can be beneficial. Stress management is all about taking charge of lifestyle, thoughts, emotions, and dealing with problems. Let’s face it, we can’t completely eliminate stressors so we need something to help us adapt.
There are many components to our mental wellness, neurological, chemistry, behavioral, thought, emotions. Our emotions affect single one of us and every single one of us on a daily basis. Not only do we all deal with emotions, we all process stress differently and it shows up in our lives in various forms. For some of us it shows in our gut in the form of stomach aches or in our heads in the form of headaches.
There are some constants that we all deal with in reference to emotions and stress. The constants are,
Chemical Changes: These are our hormones
Autonomic Response: Our fight or flight response that links with our cortisol levels (stress hormone)
Physiological Changes: Sweating, increased heart rate, stomach aches, headaches etc
There are also things that vary such as,
The key point here is anxious feelings can be episodic or due to a physiologic imbalance. When they are episodic they preceded by a trigger. Something happens that brings on the anxious feelings, then from there the body has a chemical response, there are physiological changes and eventually the body comes back into balance.
When there is a physiological imbalance the chemical response, physiological changes and balance cycle through without the trigger. When a trigger is the cause of anxious feelings it is easier to understand that if we remove the trigger we will see a change in the cycle. It is harder to affect or understand if it is a physiological imbalance, however there are some great natural options out there for us to use to support our bodies when we are dealing with these anxious feelings and stress cycle.
Let’s learn a little bit about some of the important neurotransmitters.
Serotonin: This is found mostly in the digestive system, however it is also found in the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). It is considered a natural mood stabilizer and deficiency in this can lead to intense feelings of sadness.
GABA: (gamma aminobutyric acid) is a naturally occurring amino acid that works as a neurotransmitter in our brains. It producing a calming effect in our brains and deficiences can lead to an overstimation of neurons that lead to anxious feelings.
Alkaloids: Support the bodies ability to sustain both serotonin and GABA. There is a very selective group of alkaloids that talk to the receptors in our body that produce serotonin and GABA.
Essential Fatty Acids: These are essential for supporting brain structure and function, however 80% of the population is deficient in fatty acids such as Omega 3 & 6.
With this knowledge of the neurotransmitters we can then discuss how this information can help us in working with our bodies to manage our anxious feelings.
One of the best things we can do to decrease anxious feelings is breathe! Deep breathing has been shown to reduce anxious feelings and reduce stress. Specifically when we belly breathe, it stimulates our parasympathetic nervous system which helps to bring our body to a state of rest and out of fight or flight. You can do as little as 2-3 minutes of deep breathing or even work your way up to doing 20-30 minutes a day. This deep belly breathing coupled with yoga asana (movement) is one of my personal favorite ways to decrease stress.
I also like to couple my deep breathing with essential oils. Breathing in an essential oil helps to immediately stimulate the limbic brain and influence behavior, thought, and emotion. it has fast acting benefits. There are so many great options, in general florals or comforting, woods are grounding and citrus is uplifting.
This last week doTERRA released their brand new Adaptiv line that has a undiluted blend of essential oils as well as a diluted roll on option.
When stress and tension seem to be relentless, Adaptiv Calming Blend is the precise solution. In preliminary studies, the scent of Lavender, a main ingredient of Adaptiv, has been found to contribute to an environment conducive to performing tasks requiring sustained attention. Lavender, Magnolia, Neroli, and Sweetgum provide stress-relieving effects while Wild Orange and Spearmint energize and uplift. Copaiba and Rosemary soothe anxious feelings to round out the calming blend. Whether you’re feeling fatigued or restless, indecisive or irritable, Adaptiv Calming Blend is part of the toolbox to help the body and mind to stay balanced.
This blend is great to pop in the diffuser throughout the day, while the roller can be applied to the inside of the wrists, inside of the elbows, over the heart or on the back on the neck as needed.
doTERRA also released a supplement called the Adaptiv Calming Blend. It is an effective answer to reducing stress and helping to restore mental and physical resiliency.
The Adaptiv™ Calming Blend Capsules have mood-boosting and tension-reducing effects of a blend of CPTG® essential oils Lavender, Coriander, Wild Orange, and Fennel along with Sceletium, GABA, and Ahiflower®.
Botanical extract Sceletium comes from a succulent plant found in South Africa known as Kanna. Sceletium Extract is responsibly sourced from a sustainable supply with endorsement by the South African indigenous knowledge holders. A unique phytochemical ingredient found in Sceletium Extract, brings a feeling of “alert serenity.” The extract supports healthy emotional responses to everyday stressors and promotes feelings of happiness and well-being. It balances healthy levels of mood-stabilizing hormones and improves cognitive function while combating occasional nervousness.
A quieting neurotransmitter, GABA, also helps promote relaxation. GABA has a natural comforting effect and helps reduce feelings of apprehension and fear by decreasing neuronal excitability. Sometimes called “the brakes of the brain,” because it lowers the activity of neural cells in the brain and central nervous system, it has the effect of moving the brain and the body into lower gear. By inhibiting neural activity, GABA reduces mental and physical strain.
These soft gels can be used daily to combat stress, tension, and occasional anxious feelings. In just the week since some of us have been able to start using them I have seen incredible results in supporting the body with attention, focus, mental clarity, anxious feelings, stress and overwhelm. It has been truly amazing!!!! The Adativ line will be available for everyone to purchase on October 1st, 2019.
As we discussed earlier essential fatty acids are also important in brain health and function. I personally use doTERRA’s lifelong vitality pack to help ensure that I am getting my daily dose of these fatty acids.
