Keeping Pests Out of Your Garden

It is not a matter of if you will have uninvited guests in your garden but when! Essential oils are incredible at helping you tackle these pests while not having to use chemicals on the plants your plan to eat from.  invaluable when it comes to dealing garden threats.

There are a wide variety of essential oils that can be used to deter unwanted pests from your garden. I have listed some of my favorites below.

Aphids: Peppermint, Spearmint, Cedarwood, Orange

Beetles: Peppermint, Thyme, Garlic

Chiggers: Lavender, Lemongrass, Sage, Thyme

Fleas: Lavender, Lemongrass, Sage, Thyme

Flies: Basil, Clove, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Peppermint, Rosemary

Gnats: Patchouli, Spearmint

Mosquitoes: Lavender, Lemongrass, Rosemary

Moths: Peppermint, Lavender, Cedarwood

Slugs: Cedarwood, Pine, Patchouli

Snails: Cedarwood, Patchouli

Spiders: Peppermint, Lemon, Lime, Orange, Lavender

TicksLavender, Lemongrass, Thyme, Sage, Melaleuca

There are a number of ways you can apply the essential oils to your plants. In the beginning I thought I had to constantly spray the plants but I have learned some other great tricks along the way.

  • Sprays–4-8 drops essential per gallon of water
  • Hanging strips of cloth—1 drop of undiluted essential oil per strip. Hang from a branch, using multiple cloths to cover desired area.
  • String—Soak a string is a solution of water and essentials oils then string between plant rows to deter flying insects.

I have created my own spray with some of the essential oils that come up for multiple pests I am trying to get rid of.  I added about 10 drops each of lavender, rosemary, peppermint, thyme, and cedarwood and filled the spray bottle with water.  Then I simply shake and give my plants a spray every couple days.
