DIY Non-Toxic Bug Spray and Bug Bite Relief

As we move into Spring I have been hearing a lot more about bugs and subsequently bug bites.  We all grew up with those brand name bug sprays that kept the bugs away but have all types of chemicals in them.  Today I am going give you some great information about how to make your own Non-Toxic Bug Spray and what to use if you still do get bit by a bug.

Many bug sprays have DEET as their active ingredient.  Did you know that DEET is a neurotoxic chemical that has been shown to cause death of brain neurons when tested on lab rats after frequent and prolonged exposure.  Obviously, DEET isn't something I want to be putting on my skin, even if I don't use it frequently.  Well lucky for us there is a healthier yet still effective option.

The first option is to simply purchase doTERRA's premade bug spray. This 30 mL spray bottle is super convenient and can be thrown in your purse or bag easily.  Just spray on as needed.  It works amazing and doesn't leave a gross residue or odor.  It is only $19.50 if you are a wholesale member.

Want to make your own spray?

What you will need:

  • 4 oz spray bottle (I buy these)
  • 10 drops Purify
  • 10 drops Peppermint
  • 10 drops TerraShield
  • Water

Instructions:

  1. Combine the essential oils in the spray bottle and then fill with water.
  2. Shake well before each use.
  3. Spray on clothing and exposed skin, be careful to avoid the eyes.

What do you do if the bugs still get you?  Well, it's best to be prepared with some oils to support your skin.  This combination works great for me!

What you will need:

  • 10 mL Roller Bottle (Can be found out health food stores or online)
  • 10 drops Lemon
  • 10 drops Lavender
  • 10 drops Peppermint
  • Fractionated Coconut Oil

Instructions:

  1. Combine the essential oils in the roller bottle and then fill with Fractionated Coconut Oil.
  2. Shake well before each use.
  3. Apply topically to bug bites to decrease skin irritation.
